Being away from my family to take my bachelor’s in education is no easy task. This education is however especially important to me, I want to be the best I can be at teaching. I push extremely hard to ensure I am doing more than is asked of me, to support my professional growth and to make sure I get all I can form this education. Educating the future generation is everything to me and I am incredibly grateful that my efforts are being recognized. Not to mention the financial assistance that goes along with getting good grades is a huge support to me and my family.

2004-

This bachelors degree was such an amazing experience. It helped me become who I am today. This was an important experience for me as I discovered the power of learning outside, and all that nature has to offer us. Even in tough situations, leadership came easy to me. Looking back on this degree, and the experiences that came because of it, I see how this helped me become a better leader and learn so much from our land. I now understand and feel a connection to the First Peoples Principals of Learning which will help me incorporate them into my teachings.

I started this bachelor’s in administration thinking it was the right thing to do to deepen my knowledge of advanced business theories and skills. I wanted to own an adventure lodge, where visitors come stay and play. In my first second semester I seen students walking around campus with hiking backpacks and other adventure tools, and in my daydreams, I realised business was not my path. I stopped my degree after a year and still walked away with a certificate, walked away literally into the forest in my bachelors in outdoor education.

After being a stay-at-home mom for 7 years, I needed a career change. Leaving for weeks at a time was no longer an option so I thought I love kids, why not have the same schedule as them. I took this training online andI learned so much about diversity, support, and inclusion. I loved being a CEA but often, I would look at the teacher and think I could do that and so much more (and make more money)! Reflecting now, with the diversity and sociocultural influences that are seen in the classroom, I feel this training will help me a lot as a teacher. I feel every teacher should have this training.

Over the years my jobs have pushed me to getting first aid certificates. Working in restaurants, I volunteered to get my CPRC and workplace first aid. Through my Bachelors in outdoor education, I got my 80 hr. wilderness survival as well as my leave no trace instructor certificate. When I was finishing me EA degree, I worked as an ECE and got my standard child care first aid and CPR. I feel all my experiences within my first aid courses will help me to be ready for any unexpected events in the classroom.

Food safe BC around 2007 and in the USA 2013

This food safety course was great education, as we deal with food on a daily bases. This is important knowledge to have to ensure safe handling of food. This is useful in my personal growth as it is defiantly information I can share and teach my students.

Leave no Trace instructor, 2005

In this course responsible outdoor recreation through education, research, and partnerships, is taught and guided by evidence-based research, to help minimize human impact on nature. I feel this aligns well with the First Peoples Principals of Learning: For example, Learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land. the spirits, and the ancestors and learning involves recognizing the consequences of ones action. This is great knowledge to have and to teach to ensure the health of our land.

The First Peoples Principle of Learning that “learning takes patience and time” was highlighted throughout this workshop along with many classroom resources; from physical books to activities and strategies. Everyone has a story to share, and providing these story workshops helps you students to develop their storytelling skills, that helps you to connect, share, assess, and teach your students. The story workshops are very inclusive and adaptable making it ideal for all learners, especially apprehensive ones. The deep play helps to break barriers students may face, to foster engagement to succeed in teaching and learning: Play = Story = Writing.
